SnazziePrompts by snazzie-designz

Sparking creativity, helping to overcome artist's block, pushing artists to create things they would never have tried before the newly launched #SnazziePrompts are daily theme words that prompt you to get creative.

Draw a picture, take a photo, cook some recipe, make something, write something, find a song inspired by the prompt of the day.

The idea was inspired by the wonderful Inktober SnazziePrompts are not limited to October but can be done all year around anytime you want, and they are open to anyone including artists, crafters, photographers, writers, musicians, people who may not ever have considered themselves artists and anyone who wants to join in.

This is a screenshot of the free printable #SnazziePrompts prompts for 2020.

Each daily prompt is in a 2.5cm square box which you can doodle directly in on days where you're busy and have only a few seconds or minutes to spare, and on days where you have more time you can do a full sketch or drawing on a separate sheet and tick the box.

For those who don't like drawing you can write a poem, take a photo, cook some recipe, make something, write something, find a song inspired by the prompt of the day and then tick the box for that day.

Lindisfarne-WM by snazzie-designz
This is a handmade Coptic bound journal with a map of Lindisfarne Holy Island pyrographed (wood burned) into the cover, inspired by LawrenceCornellPhoto. Go check out his truly gallery of photographic wonderland.

There are representations of St. Cutbert's boat in the harbour, a Viking ship from the West, and English and Spanish ships from the Spanish Armada to show the long history of the island. When the tide is low a causeway is exposed so that people can walk out to the island.

The Celtic frame is inspired by one of the designs in the Book of Lindisfarne ilustrated by St.Cuthbert's monks on the island circa years 715AD-720AD. The monks who illuminated this book seemed eager to make the border take up a lof of space on the page which I'm guessing was to minimise the amount of detail work in the centre that they would need to do. I needed the opposite and wanted to maximise the space on the cover, so I designed a re-imagined version of the knotwork witn the knotwork inside the corners rather than outside to optimise the space on the cover for the map. Take a look at the picture below to see the original border compared to my redesigned border.

Handmade RAF Eagle Squadron 71 Medal Box Profile by snazzie-designz
Handmade RAF Eagle Squadron 71 Medal Box by snazzie-designz

For those of you who have been watching me for a while you will know that I regularly collaborate with the marvellous :iconaldwarke: Aldwarke.

This R.A.F. box and matching plaque are not quite a collaboration but rather they are a combination birthday gift and overall thank you for the amazing boxes, advice, help and encouragement over the years.  I knew he had a collection of R.A.F. medals but no display for them so I decided that I'd make him a custom box to fit his medals in.

The box itself is made of oak and teak with a mahogany lid.

The compartments of the box are specifically sized to each of the medals and have holes in them for the pins at the back so that the medals sit flush in the box.

When I was making the box I didn't have the actual medals so I had to make paper cut outs of them to the exact size to make sure each compartment would be the rights size.

The crest is 3D and contains individually cut pieces of maple, basswood, beech and American walnut. The Eagle squadrons in the R.A.F. were for planes crewed by Americans so it seemed fitting that I use American walnut for the eagle's wings very kindly sent to me by :iconskyfiredragon: SkyFireDragon.

The eagle claws are less than 1cm square and were incredibly tricky to cut out.

The crest frame with is actually four separate pieces

(the crown and outer laurel leaves, the inner circle with the motto, and inner frame again with a raised edge and an background piece for the eagle to sit on) all individually cut and glued together because the Eagle Squadron motto is at a lower level than the surrounding laurel leaves and inside gold band. The Laurel leaves on the outer ring of the crest took AGES to cut, but it was well worth it.

The indentations on the middle tray not only serve as finger holds so that you can lift the tray out, but also make the tray into a cross shape that matches the top of the crown.

"Per Ardua Ad Astra" is the R.A.F. motto pyrographed (burned) into the sides of the lid which loosely translates as"Through adversity to the stars".

The smaller R.A.F. crest is pyrographed (burned) into maple veneer and was subsequently inlaid onto the inside of the mahogany lid.

The "First From The Eyries" scroll has the text pyrographed (burned)  into it whereas the "Eagle Squadron 71" text on the crest itself is hand  painted in gold.

Since the medal box was not suited to mounting on the wall I did a matching R.A.F. Eagle Squadron 71 plaque to match.

Aslan Box

8 min read

It's been a long time since I've had the opportunity to upload anything or to comment or reply to comments on dA, so this one is long overdue.

I was very lucky to get my hands on this beautiful box made by :iconaldwarke: aldwarke with some hand chiseled indents around the edges of the lid to reveal a beautiful striped pattern from the ply layering.

I've always loved the poster for "The Lion,The Witch and the Wardrobe" and the tooth bites on the edges of the lid made me think of it for this box.

Also this was my first time experimenting with bottled ink on wood. Unlike paint which masks the wood and hides the grain and the burn marks, ink soaks into the wood and enhanced the grain, whilst allowing the burned shading to come through.

Also you get seamless blending of colours as you can see in the background which goes from dark navy to blue to aquamarine to amber.

Anyway I hope you like it.
