Custom Made Yin-Yang Box by snazzie-designz Custom Made Yin-Yang Box by snazzie-designz
This is a one off custom made wedding ring box inspired by the ancient Yin-Yang symbol representing male and female energies in perfect balance.

I used a scroll saw to cut out the box and lid pieces. I actually bought a new scroll saw for this project, so it was fun playing with a new toy, though it took a few practice pieces to get the hang of it.

The base is made from a solid piece of oak, with the holes routed out, and lined with felt in a matching colour to the bridesmaid dresses.

The Yin wood is Ipé (Thanks to :iconskyfiredragon: SkyfireDragon and :icondragonwooddesigns: Dragonwooddesigns who helped me to identify the wood).

The Yang wood is pine and the grain of the wood curves around the tail end of the piece to strengthen it.

The box is finished with several coats of French Polish, and special thanks to :iconaldwarke: aldwarke with is help on teaching me how to do French Polishing properly.

You can see a work in progress picture linked below.

I didn't learn anything from a particular place. I've never had any woodwork lessons or taken any classes except for a one day carving course and a two day wood turning course. Everything else I've learnt by trial and error, and with the helpful tips of friends here on dA.

I'm only new to box making. I've only ever made three and you've seen them here. I'm inspired by lots of things and people, and stuff from the internet but all of my boxes are my own designs. The designs are initially inspired by something and then adapted and refined until they are practical and functional.

The yin-yang box was for someone who I train with in martial arts and the yin-yang symbols is integral to marital arts as well as representing the eternal sacred masculine and feminine in perfect balance, so I thought it would be good to make a box from the yin yang symbol to hold his and her rings. It was designed for two wedding rings so therefore it needed to have two compartments. I didn't want them to fumble with the lid so it seemed an obvious thing to have the lid slide outwards so the it could be held and so the the hands would not be blocking access to the rings.

The butterfly box was inspired by the wonderful stock photo in the summer craft competition. Butterflies wings open so I decided to make the lid of the box open like the wings.

The shell box was inspired by the shell itself.

If you follow what inspires you, then it will lead you making things that are all your own, and you will develop your own style.

you have a very shrewd mind. i would like to see more of your work :D. but let me give you a piece of advice. i know that you already finished the yin and yang box and it's probably too late to fix it if there is mistakes. but since you said that it's gonna be used for "wedding" jewelry, meaning real silver or gold. in the future if you are making a jewelry box for a client, ask them if they are gonna use real jewelry or not. becasue it seems that the inner part of the box is some kind of fabric. wood, metal or even boxes that are inlaid with some sort of fabric are the least desirable boxes for real jewelry. because it can easily discolor the jewelry in a short period of time. turning the gold jewelry into brown stains and silver jewelry into yellow stains and if not cleaned asap, into black-ish stains.

the best boxes for storing real gold and silver jewelry are ceramic, glass or plastic boxes. as the metals don't tend to discolor in them for a long periods of time.

Thanks. Well there's lots of stuff in my gallery if you feel like taking a look.

Yes it was felt lined because I thought it would be softer and not scrape the rings. The box was for the wedding rings on the wedding day. After that the couple wear their wedding rings and don't generally take them off, so the box can be used for something else.

Thanks so much for the tip. I'm amazed that the felt lining is so bad for jewellery since nearly every jeweler over here use felt lined boxes for theirs. I'll line my boxes in plastic in future.

most jewelers here, if you noticed, make copper, brass, bronze and steel jewelries which are all non-precious metals so they don't have to worry about the discoloration becasue the theme of their jewelry is mostly wrapped, steam punk or goth and the like. i have yet to see a jeweler who posts works about gold or silvers but i doubt it becasue this is a fan site and if that jeweler wants to earn a good popularity and money then there are more professional sites than deviantart.

you can make a box from clouds and the jewelry will still scrape itself. as long as its a container. if you are worried about scraping jewelry then i suggest you put them in one of those small zip plastic bags separately before you put them in the box. zip locks are the best when it comes to storing precious jewelry because no air can go inside which means no oxidation which means no discoloring.

OR

you can make a box that looks like chocolate box and put each jewelry in each hole and you won't have to worry about them scrapping each other. see i gave you and idea for a box to make. Mind blown

I was talking about boxes from jewelry that you would buy fro a jewelers in the shops over here. I've bought silver, gold and platinum rings in a proper jewelers over here and they all came in a box that was felt lined. maybe it's a special felt that they use, or maybe they want the rings to tarnish so that you have to bring them back to be cleaned?

That's really interesting about the zip lock bags and a great idea about the chocolate box. You've given me great ideas. Thanks so much.

Thanks so much. You've made my day. :) Yes I was delighted when the couple decided to use it in the ceremony itself which was lovely, and I think a good sign that they liked it. A lot of guests at the wedding came up to me to mention it too which was really delightful.
